May 1st - Beauty and Memories

The top picture is the view from Susan's front yard. Bottom picture is from her backyard.
Surrounded in pink, May 1st, 2010. Life is good.

Historically, when both trees are in full bloom, the wind picks up and blows all the blossoms off the trees and in a day or so we have to clean up a blanket of pink petals. And, true to form, the wind is rippling through the trees right now.

May 1st used to be such a fun day when we three sisters were girls. We celebrated "May Basket Day" by making baskets (I should say Mom made the baskets) out of saved empty milk cartons, cut down, covered with crepe paper, and handles attached. We filled them with popcorn and candy. We especially loved the combination of flavors when the puffy pastel party mints met popcorn - delicious! We sneakily delivered them to our friends, hanging the basket on the doorknob, ringing the bell, and running like crazy to hide. The recipient opened the door, found the basket, and immediately came out to find us. A chase ensued. And once caught, you got a kiss! The scene repeated many times in each of the neighboring yards. It was a greatly anticipated day each year.

I think I'll go buy some of those puffy mints and make some popcorn. And sit on my deck and watch my pink tree.
